The Honeymoon Ends in a Hallucination

I still remember the first time an LLM spat out a perfectly formatted block of code that actually solved my problem. It felt like a career epiphany. I thought I was looking at the end of boilerplate, the death of syntax errors, and a permanent exit from the salt mines of Stack Overflow.

For many of us in the community, that was the dopamine hit that hooked us.

We stopped being solo architects and started feeling like conductors of an invisible, infinitely fast orchestra. But lately, the music has started to sound a bit discordant. The discourse among senior engineers has shifted from how much time we are saving to how much time we are losing to the illusion of competence. We are hitting a wall where the "confidence" of the AI is becoming its most expensive bug.

Maxence Rimue recently captured this sentiment perfectly on Dev.to. He pointed out that while he once saw AI as a tool that amplified his abilities, he has hit a frustrating new reality. Sometimes, it actually makes it more difficult to accomplish a task. We are moving out of the magic phase and into the maintenance phase, and the view from here is a lot less rosy.

The Audit Tax

In a traditional development workflow, you own every line you write. You understand the "why" because you wrestled with the logic yourself. When you bring an AI into the mix, you aren't just writing code anymore. You are auditing it.

This creates a massive cognitive tax.

It is much harder to find a subtle logic error in a 50-line block of generated code that looks syntactically perfect than it is to write those 50 lines from scratch. AI models have mastered the art of the confident lie. They present hallucinations with the same authoritative polish as a senior architect, which forces the developer into a permanent state of high alert. You are constantly scanning for that one hallucinated parameter or a deprecated library call hidden in a sea of beautiful, clean-looking code.

Think of it like a GPS that works 90 percent of the time but occasionally tells you to drive into a lake with absolute certainty. You can never truly relax. You are always hovering over the steering wheel, waiting for the moment the machine loses its mind. After a few hours of this, the mental fatigue is often higher than if you had just navigated the map yourself.

The Velocity Illusion

There is a specific kind of velocity that managers love to talk about, usually involving how many tickets get moved to "Review" in a week. AI coding assistants are great at inflating this metric. They help you sprint through the initial draft of a feature, but we are starting to see a technical debt back-load during the integration and testing phases.

A developer might save 20 minutes generating a complex function, but if that function contains a subtle memory leak or ignores a project-specific architectural constraint, the team might spend two days debugging it later.

The AI lacks the context of your specific system. It doesn't know that your legacy database has a weird locking behavior or that your state management library is three versions behind the standard. It provides a generic best guess that often clashes with reality. This is where the illusion of competence becomes dangerous. When the code looks right, we are more likely to approve the pull request. We are essentially trading a small amount of upfront effort for a massive, unpredictable amount of downstream risk.

The Burden of the Prompt

Then there is the so-called "Art of the Prompt." We were told that natural language would be the new programming language. In practice, writing a prompt that is specific enough to get a correct, production-ready result often takes as much effort as writing the code itself.

If I have to spend ten minutes articulating the edge cases, the variable constraints, and the architectural requirements for a function, I could have probably typed out the logic in five minutes.

The effectiveness of the tool is strictly limited by the user’s ability to articulate the problem. For junior developers, this is a trap. They may not even know which questions to ask, leading them to blindly trust output that is confident but wrong. This isn't just a productivity issue. It is a skill atrophy issue. If we stop solving the hard problems ourselves, we eventually lose the ability to catch the AI when it fails.

Beyond the Junior Assistant

Right now, I tend to view AI as a very fast, very eager junior assistant who has a habit of making things up when they are stressed. They are great for writing unit tests or boilerplate, but you would never give them the keys to the production environment without a thorough, line-by-line review.

As a senior dev, my focus is always on Developer Experience and long-term maintainability. If a tool introduces more friction than it removes, it isn't an amplification of my skills. It is a distraction. We need to move past the hype and start demanding empirical data on where these tools actually help and where they just create more work for the humans in the loop.

We are at a crossroads in software engineering. If we spend more time verifying automated code than we would have spent writing it manually, we haven't actually automated anything. We have just turned ourselves into the manual QA department for our own tools. The real question for the coming year isn't how much code the AI can write, but how much of it we can actually afford to trust.
